South Dakota Lottery

The South Dakota lottery was created in 1986 after 60% of voters approved a constitutional amendment allowing for its operation. The bill was signed the following year and the first instant tickets went on sale within six months. Then in 1990 the first draw-based game was introduced, quickly followed by the Powerball and Megamillions games, after South Dakota became a member of the Multi-State Lottery Association. Net proceeds are reserved for education, the development of natural resources and the promotion of responsible gaming.
