Texas Lottery

The Texas lottery began operations in 1992 after an amendment to the state constitution was approved by voters the previous year. Managed and supervised by the Texas Lottery Commission who took over from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, the first game was an instant scratch-card with tickets going on sale in April of 1992 – proceeds from the first week amounted to $23.2 million. Texas joined the Mega Millions consortium in 2003 and also offers the Powerball game after a cross-selling agreement between the Mega Millions and Powerball operators.
