West Virginia Lottery

The West Virginia Lottery was introduced in 1986, two years after being overwhelmingly voted through in a state referendum. The first tickets which went on sale were instants with more than 1.5 million sold on the first day alone. To date, the West Virginia Lottery has generated over $9 billion in proceeds which have been directed to projects in public education, senior services as well as the tourism industry. Benefactors have included the School Building Authority, the Higher Education Policy Commission and the West Virginia Department of Education.
