Maine Lottery

In 1973, residents of Maine were given a referendum in which they voted for the establishment of a state lottery. One year later, Maine’s first draw-based game, Play Me, was introduced followed by an instant game known as the Great Outdoors in 1975. In 1985, it joined the Tri State Lotto Compact along with New Hampshire and Vermont in order to expand its portfolio of games. Today, Maine is a member of both the multi-state jackpot draw, mega Millions as well as Lucky for Life. Since its inception, the ticket proceeds amounting to $1.24 billion have been transferred to the Maine State Government’s General Fund which distributed funds to help local schools, higher educations and health services.
